Kiwi Kayaker Pipped At The Post

In one of the closest finals in kayaking world championship history, Olympic silver medalist and New Zealand kayak champion, Ben Fouhy has been pipped at the post in the 2007 world championship K1 1000 final held in Hungary overnight.

Fouhy was placed third in a race where only 0.084 of a second separated the first three kayakers.

Fouhy says the race was difficult, with a dispersed field that was hard to cover.
In a tough line-up, his Olympic rival, Adam Van Koerverden (Canada) was placed fourth. Former Olympic champion and double world champion, Eirik Vers-Larsen was also not placed.

"I'm delighted with the result," says Fouhy.

"I was aiming for a podium finish and I achieved it.

"If there was anywhere that I wanted to win a world championship medal it was here in Hungary."

Ben Fouhy says he has never raced in front of so many people with around 30,000 people watching the event.

"At the time it was frustrating given that it was so close, but I'm more than happy with this bronze medal," he says.
