Exhibition: The Great South Road

Media Release 19 September 2006

The Great South Road – Where Cultures Converge

Permanent photographic exhibition at TelstraClear Pacific Centre,
Great South Road, Manukau

A large-scale (10 metres by 5.5 metres) exhibition of photographs by Peter James Quinn documenting life along Auckland’s Great South Road will soon hang permanently at the southern entrance to Manukau’s TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre.

The images were produced while Quinn photographed on contract for New Zealand Geographic magazine, and featured in issue 61 of the magazine, along with an essay by Auckland historian, Vaughan Yarwood.

The exhibition was commissioned by the Counties–Manukau Pacific Trust, with funding coming from the South Auckland Charitable Trust, to install a permanent display of 33 of Peter Quinn’s contemporary “Great South Road” images, accompanied by an overview of the Great South Road’s history by Vaughan Yarwood.

Chris Culverwell at PCL Imaging created the Fuji Crystal Archive exhibition prints and 1.2 mtre x 2 mtre murals from Quinn’s original transparencies for the exhibition, which will be open from September 25th 2006.

The exhibition will be an opportunity to showcase an iconic landmark and important piece of Auckland’s history, its diversity of ethnic cultures, and will help to put more documentary photography on view for the city’s population to appreciate.

Admission to view the exhibition is free and school resource material will be available.
