Opportunity For Young Musicians

Eight young musicians will take the opportunity to be concerto soloists accompanied by some of this country’s top professional performers in a concert to be held at St Andrews-in-the-City, Wellington, on Sunday 22 October.

The Michael Monaghan Young Musicians Foundation was established eleven years ago to support and encourage young instrumentalists in their studies. The Annual Young Artists Concert hosted by the Foundation, has become established as a highlight in Wellington’s orchestral event calendar. Talented student musicians are given the chance to perform a concerto movement accompanied by an orchestra consisting mainly of New Zealand Symphony Orchestra musicians who volunteer their services.

“This will be the ninth Young Artists Concert,” explains Peter van Drimmelen, founding trustee of the Foundation and an NZSO violist himself. “Following competitive auditions earlier in the year, eight students are chosen to perform,. This year we will hear a movement from each of a Telemann recorder Concerto, violin concertos by Mozart, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, violin works from Vieuxtemps and Sarasate, a piano concerto by Mozart and Bruch’s Kol Nidrei for cello.

“The aim of the Foundation is to provide a stepping stone in performance experience between private instrumental tuition and tertiary study. The opportunity to play accompanied by an orchestra rather than a piano reduction of the score, is often an important and inspiring experience for these young players and can confirm their commitment to further musical study.”

Peter and conductor-composer Kenneth Young will each conduct four of the concerto movements. The orchestra will be led by NZSO violinist Greg Squire. The concert will be held at St Andrews-in-the-City, Wellington, on Sunday 22 October from 3:00pm. There are door sales only: $15 waged, $10 unwaged, $25 families.
