Carter Grabs Another World Title

New Zealand triathlete Hamish Carter has taken out the XTERRA World Championships in Makena, Hawaii.

While Carter has won XTERRA New Zealand for the past three years running, it was the first time that he has ever competed in the World Championships.

After an intense race, Carter completed the 1.5 kilometre swim, 30 kilometre mountain bike and 11 kilometre trail run over rough terrain including lava rocks, sand and uneven surfaces, with a time of 2:42:36, 19 seconds ahead of French competitor Olivier Marceau.

Carter's manager Roger Mortimer said Carter was amongst the leaders for the entire race, coming out of the water just behind Canadian Brent McMahon.

"Carter took the lead during the bike phase but suffered a puncture to his back tyre just two kilometres before the end of that part of the race. It put him one minute behind Marceau at the start of the run," Mortimer said.

"Fortunately, Carter was able to make up some time on the run leg and caught Marceau towards the end of the race."

"It's an excellent accomplishment for Carter who's had a great year of competition, winning XTERRA New Zealand and coming in second at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championships in Lausanne in September."
