Champion Brass On The Shore

More than 40 brass bands are expected to attend the 127th New Zealand Brass Band Championships at North Shore City - Auckland next July according to contest chairman Bob Davis.

“This is the first time that this high profile, five-day festival has been held in North Shore City (formerly Takapuna City) with the main events taking place at the fine Bruce Mason Centre in central Takapuna, with other elements at Rosmini College, St Peter’s Church and St George’s Church” said Mr Davis

Four bands from Australia have indicated they will be crossing the Tasman sea and will provide an extra element for the kiwi bands to compete with. Over 1200 musicians will travel to the seaside city for intense competition including the main band contests, Invitation Slow Melody, Junior and Open Champion of Champions, and the Scenic Circle Hotels Band of the Year, which is held on the final afternoon. “This makes it one of the largest music festivals by participation in New Zealand” said Mr Davis

The traditional street march by the bands remains a part of the event and will take place on Lake Road, Takapuna on Saturday morning 7th July with North Shore City Mayor, George Wood taking the salute and a large crowd is expected to line the streets.

The invited chief adjudicator will be Nigel Boddice MBE from Scotland, who is known throughout the UK and Europe as an experienced adjudicator, conductor and music educator.

“We are well advanced with our planning, and are determined that the North Shore will present a memorable event for all concerned. We have had marvellous support and encouragement from North Shore City Council and bands will be impressed with the excellence of the facilities at the Bruce Mason Centre” Mr Davis said.
