Cricket Fans Beware of Bogus Website Mimicking CARICOM IMPACS

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --

Cricket fans preparing to come to the Caribbean are being warned to avoid a bogus website which has been set up by an unauthorized company.

"This site purports to offer, among other things, the CARICOM Special Visa, which can only be applied for at http://www.caricomimpacs.org , the official website. The fact is the site is nothing more than a way to draw surfers to other attractions and thus make money on our heads," says CARICOM IMPACS Media Consultant, Julian Rogers.

Investigations show that the bogus website, which uses the .com extension instead of the official .org associated with CARICOM IMPACS, was set up more than a year ago.

"Such websites are used to garner click advertising for a variety of products and services not related to the genuine site," said Mr. Rogers.

The Caribbean is hosting the ICC Cricket World Cup for the very first time and the event has attracted worldwide attention with the participation of 16 teams featuring the world's best cricketers.

"We have moved to complain to the offending party about their 'typosquatting' as well as to the company that manages domain registrations," added Mr. Rogers.

CARICOM IMPACS is responsible for the security arrangements committed to by host countries, who have created a single domestic space from January 15 to May 15 2007.

To facilitate hassle-free travel, a special CARICOM Visa is being issued that will provide immigration officials with the authority to stamp passports at the first point of entry and then monitor further movement with the submission of ED forms at other ports of entry.

CRICKET FANS FROM THE DESIGNATED COUNTRIES OUTSIDE OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY WILL NEED TO APPLY FOR THEIR SPECIAL VISAS BY FILING ONLINE AT HTTP://WWW.CARICOMIMPACS.ORG , THE ONLY OFFICIAL SITE.
