Hollywood Gold Goes Country
If you like to take your movies al fresco with a pinch of nostalgia then the Sealord Summer Festival once again invites you to get into the spirit of the ‘community lounge’.
This year’s Summer Movies Al Fresco take a trip back to the glory days of Hollywood, and will feature movie classics from the early 1930’s. Screening on Sunday 21st of January in the Village Green in Takaka is the 1933 version of King Kong, on Thursday 25 January at Jester House in Tasman it’s Rebel Without A Cause with the sultry James Dean and on Friday 26 January at Thorpes Bush in Motueka you can watch Gene Kelly Singing In The Rain.
Tapawera is a new venue for this years Movies Al Fresco and coordinator Antony Hodgson says that nearly half of the summer movie screenings for the 2007 festival are at regional venues.
‘Classic Hollywood movies have big characters and they suit the big screen in an outdoor setting,’ he says. ‘It’s also an opportunity for a group of friends to kick back under the stars, bring some gourmet food to the local park, and as darkness falls be carried away on a wave of Hollywood movie nostalgia.’
The Amplified Picnics were so popular last year that there will be a lot more held this year. From 6pm families can come along early with a picnic, listen to the music, have a bit of a boogie and some fun with hula hoop, jump rope and play big ball volleyball until it gets dark enough to show the movie.
The Amplified Picnics are free, however to stay on for the movie it is $2 for an adult and $1 for children. Movie goers are advised that the screenings don’t start until it is dark (around 9pm). Bring warm clothes, a rug and a torch for getting home.
