Wellington Cup Carnival Shaping to be Memorable

Wellington Cup Carnival Shaping to be Most Memorable Ever

The 2007 Century City Developments Wellington Cup Carnival is shaping up to be the most memorable ever if the quality of horses targeting the meeting and oncourse entertainment is anything to go by.

Top class wine and thoroughbred racing is the order of the day at the Wine & Racing Festival on Saturday, January 20.

The wine festival has attracted some of New Zealand's finest wineries.
The racing action promises to be outstanding with the rematch of multiple Gr.1 winners Seachange (NZ) (Cape Cross) and Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) in the Gr.1 Sharp Telegraph Handicap.

Add in quality horses such as last year's winner Gee I Jane (NZ) (Jahafil), exciting three year old Jokers Wild (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe), Hasta La Ciao Ciao (NZ) (Unbridled's Song), Shinzig (AUS) (Danehill), Anca (NZ) (Howbaddouwantit) and the Gr.1 Sharp Telegraph is sure to be a thrilling event.

The second day of the carnival is traditionally a family day and will be made all the more popular by the Destination Summer of Racing initiative. Entertainment for kids includes bouncy castles, horse & cart rides, colouring competitions and Kid's Fashion in the Field.

The final day of the carnival is Gr.1 Century City Developments Wellington Cup Day, the day that Wellington comes to party.

The Century City Developments Wellington Cup is again shaping up to be an extremely competitive race with the Australian raider Respect (NZ) (Zabeel) taking his chances against last year's winner Envoy (NZ) (Personal Escort) and up-and-coming stayers' such as Willy Smith (NZ) (Volksraad) and So You (NZ) (Grosvenor).

The Gr.1 Trusts Charitable Foundation Thorndon Mile always draws a strong and even field and the 2007 version will be no different. Australian galloper Spirit of Tara (AUS) (Song of Tara) heads the weights for the Group 1 feature with last start Rich Hill Mile winner Dezigna (NZ) (Volksraad).
The Australian participation does not end with Respect (NZ), Spirit of Tara (AUS) and Shinzig (AUS), the Wellington Racing Club is delighted to have three time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss riding on Century City Developments Wellington Cup Day as well.
