World Cinema Showcase 2007

Auckland, Academy Cinemas: March 15 – April 4
Wellington, Paramount: March 29 – April 11
Christchurch, Rialto Cinemas: April 12 – 25
Dunedin, Regent Theatre: April 19 – May 5

The New Zealand Film Festival Trust is pleased to brighten up your autumn movie-going options with the ninth annual World Cinema Showcase. Like a miniature version of the winter event the Showcase premieres a selection of fresh, stimulating, and provocative films from around the world, providing exposure for some exceptional films and filmmakers who aren’t assured of a release in New Zealand as well as hosting premiere screenings of several quality titles due for theatrical release later in the year.

While long term festival director Bill Gosden takes a well deserved break, guest programmer Richard King has been working hard to fill this year’s programme with international drama, exciting new directors, big-name stars as well as stars in the making, quality documentaries and refurbished classics.

Highlights include:

o The New Zealand premiere screenings of The Namesake, the new film by Monsoon Wedding director, Mira Nair (Auckland & Wellington only).

o A rare chance to see Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn at their very best, as John Huston’s The African Queen makes a welcome return to the big screen.

o Emily Barclay’s (In My Father’s Den) award winning performance in Australian feature Suburban Mayhem.

o Little Children, the highly anticipated Oscar nominated second feature by In the Bedroom director Todd Field, starring Kate Winslet and Jennifer Connelly.
