La Clique Sells Out!

Immediate Release
2nd March 2007

La Clique Season SELLS OUT!
Second SELL-OUT Show for
Auckland Festival, AK07

It seems Aucklanders, like the rest of the world, have fallen under the spell of La Clique - the raunchy variety show described as the sexiest, funniest, wettest and wildest act you’ll ever see! Famed for it’s celebration of risk, danger, sensuality and pure unadulterated pleasure, La Clique has sold out its entire Auckland Festival season, 9-25 March, a week before the Festival kicks off next Friday, 9th March.

Festival Director David Malacari says he is delighted another show has sold out prior to the Festival opening. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s production of Mahler 2- The Resurrection reached full capacity last week.

“We always thought La Clique would be one of the most popular Festival events in this year’s programme but we didn’t expect it to sell out before the Festival actually opened. It feels like Festival Fever has begun. Other shows are also close to selling out, which is great if you’ve got your tickets, but not so good for those who miss out. There are plenty of shows to choose from though, so my advice to those who do miss out on getting tickets to their preferred shows is to get a ticket to something else! There’s lots of great stuff to choose from.”

Malacari, who has been at the helm of the biennial Auckland Festival for two terms now, says the feedback he has had on this year’s programme, which is significantly larger than last year’s, is that people feel spoiled for choice.

“We have a lot of people coming into the office asking for advice on what shows to book. They generally just want a bit of inside knowledge and guidance, particularly if they are booking for a large number of shows. We are happy to advise people and we certainly have an open door policy, but I do say to people that Festivals are also about taking risks, go to something you know nothing about, and who knows, you might love it, or you might hate it, but at least it’s made you form an opinion, feel and think. And to be honest there’s not much to dislike in this programme. It’s a programme we’re very proud of.”

Malacari says this year people are also excited about the downtown Red Square-hub area which is a completely new concept for the Festival.

“Not only are we replacing Britomart carparks with the majestic 1920s Famous Spiegeltent, which is where La Clique and a phenomenal line-up of top local and international musicians will perform each night but we’re transforming the existing Pavilion into a decadently themed AK07 Festival Club where artists and audiences can meet. We’re erecting an outdoor stage, free live music will play every afternoon and into the early evening and to top it all off we’ve grassed the whole area so people can grab a drink from the outdoor Spiegel Bar and Café, lie down on the grass and wash away the day before going to a show that night or grabbing a bite to eat. You can’t get much better than that,” says Malacari.

The line-up for the Famous Spiegeltent and the AK07 Festival Club includes some of the country’s finest musicians including Don McGlashan, Annie Crummer, Nathan Haines, Whirimako Black, Goldenhorse, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, Dave Dobbyn plus a handful of stunning international performers unlikely to be seen outside a Festival programme, such as confrontational and hilarious comedian/singer Eddie Perfect, Australia’s very own Spaghetti Western Orchestra and Berlin micro-pop-queen Barbara Morgenstern who is joined by experimental Parisian groover Fred Avril.
