Mr Bush Why Can't We Be Friends

Kiwi Songwriter Asks the Questions Helen Clark Won't Be Asking Mr Bush

Helen Clark has indicated that some of the issues that Kiwi's are looking for answers on won't be on the table when she meets with President Bush next week. These include free trade agreements, participation in military exercises and our lukewarm relationship which is the result of our nuclear free policy. New Zealand Songwriter Luigi Cappel recently launched a song which has been doing well and producing an interesting response from military and civilian listeners in the USA.

Cappel said this morning "I have had email from several people in the US Navy and other armed forces as well as civilians saying that they were very suprised and unaware of the issues between our countries and that we should not take the US government's position as being representative of the American people. I guess it's not that surprising when a lot of American's don't even know where New Zealand is. I wrote the song to create more awareness and it appears to be working. There have been thousands of downloads from various music sites where the song is available, so there is obviously some support for it."

The song starts off with: "We're the social conscience of the world, we live downunder and we just don't understand the way you think." The song also questions the logic of free trade with China "but not with Carolina".

The chorus echoes a common sentiment with the words:

Mr Bush I'm asking why we can't be friends
It's our environment we were trying to defend
Our men fought along with yours
On a dozen foreign shores
Your logic I just fail to comprehend
