New Zealand Officially Houses Biggest Cinema Screen In The World

28 March, 2007

Guinness World RecordsTM has confirmed Auckland is home to the world’s largest multiplex screen, at Hoyts’ new Sylvia Park complex.

The gigantic screen, in Hoyts’ largest cinema, Cinemaxx, stands at 30.6 metres wide. The technical category for the Guinness World RecordTM is: World’s Largest Permanent 35mm Cinema Screen.

“Given there are some 35,000 screens in America alone, and well over 50,000 around the world, this is an amazing achievement for New Zealand and continues to reinforce the tremendous passion New Zealand has for film and cinema entertainment” says CEO of Hoyts, Stuart McInnes.

The screen took 20 people to install and is powered by a newly developed German projector and lense combination, with an 8000-watt refrigerant cooled lamp to project images onto its massive surface.

“We are absolutely thrilled we’re able to give Kiwis the opportunity to watch movies on the world’s biggest multiplex screen, right here in Auckland,” he says.

Hoyts wanted to create the biggest screen in the world after installing a 23.5 metre wide screen in its Riccarton complex in Christchurch, which opened in 2005.

“At the time it was the largest screen in the country and Cantabrians just loved it, from the day it opened. We wanted to do something really special with Sylvia Park so began research into whether we could install the world’s largest screen at the new Auckland complex.

“We’re over the moon that we have achieved this feat and believe this is something New Zealanders can be truly proud of,” he says.

The first film to be shown on the giant screen will be the premiere of the New Zealand film, Black Sheep. This will be followed by the new Rowan Atkinson Bean film, Mr Bean’s Holiday, as well as some of the greatest blockbusters ever from Spiderman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Shrek The Third, Oceans 13, the latest Harry Potter film, as well as Transformers and the Simpsons Movie. Visa Entertainment is the sponsor of Cinemaxx, the biggest screen in the world.

Hoyts Sylvia Park opens to the public on Thursday March 29.
