Super Sedan Series Goes Down to the Wire

The Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series will go down to the wire as competitors gather for this weekend's final round at the Taupo Motorsport Centre.

Several drivers remain in championship contention with Tauranga's Grant Brennan leading the series after five of the six rounds in his Brennan Corvette SB2. Brennan has amassed 277 points and was a standout performer when the series last visited Taupo in February. On that occasion Brennan won two of the three races and finished second in the other. He also lowered the lap record twice during that meeting. One of his goals for the final round this weekend is to lower the record for the class still further. "I had really old tyres last time," he said from Tauranga today. "I could not source the tyres I intended to run at that stage and I have them now. Previously I was running too tall a front tyre and the suspension adjustment was not where it needed to be." Brennan enjoys the fact that the championship is still wide open. "It is anyone's and that just proves that you do have to work for it. Steve Cox has tried extremely hard and Dean Evans has been very consistent."

Steve Cox of Auckland is 9 points behind Brennan in the title chase. Cox is hoping for a good clean run in his F40 Silhouette and is trying hard to take the championship away from Brennan. "We have been making every effort in our preparation despite some minor setbacks. We are not able to run our best gearbox after problems last time out and we will use an older type. We have our fingers crossed that it lasts. It's been a challenge to try and run at the front this year, it has taken a lot more effort to make a road car keep up with these 'rocket ships'. It has been a hard season." Cox is enthused about the venue for the final. "Taupo is a great place for the final. I love the new track, it is a fantastic drivers circuit."

Papakura driver Dean Evans is third in the championship standings with 257 points. Evans has done a superb job this season, his first on the circuits after having spent the last six years running a Ford Escort in rallies. He drives a Mazota in the series, a 1986 Mazda RX7 powered by a 4 litre Toyota V8. Evans say's he is hoping for rain this weekend. "I'm confident when the car is moving around and I've gone well at most rounds when it has rained," he says. Evans enjoys the Taupo circuit but adds, "it is very demanding. It will bite you if you don't respect it!"

Veteran Waitara driver, Ross Calgher sits fourth in the series in his Dodge Viper V10 with 234 points and he is delighted. "As a 59 year old on his third pacemaker I'm stoked," he says. "If I could consolidate that position over the weekend I'd be over the moon. This is a great class but I couldn't afford to do these events if it weren't for Carl Hansen (a fellow competitor in another category) who gives me tyres from his TVR Tuscan." Calgher loves driving the Viper. "It's a 1650 kg truck, a mean, vicious machine but everytime I drive it I have a smile on my face, I love it!"

Rounding out the top six in the championship are Robert Jack of Tauranga with 195 points in his Ford Escort Chev V8 and Paraparaumu driver Ewan Scott, another newcomer, in his Nissan Skyline powered Datsun 1200 with 170 points.

Good entries are once again expected at this, the final round of the 2006/07 series. Others who shone on the series last visit to the 3.320 kilometre central North Island track were Nigel Snow of Ohope in a Nissan 300ZX, Paul Wilton of Mangonui in his VL Commodore V8 Tourer,
Alan Duncan of Rotorua in his Saker and Aaron Eagle of Auckland in his Commodore HSV.

The Schaeffer Oil N.Z. Super Sedan Series competitors will feature in three races at Taupo including two handicap races that are bound to produce plenty of overtaking action.
