Wood Sculpture Live 2007

Wood Sculpture Live 2007

Raw wood to finished art work in 8 days

This is the challenge facing 30 sculptors at Lake House Arts Centre. Between Saturday 14 and Saturday 21 April, the artist will use chain saws, axes, chisels and sanders to produce wonderful art works from tree trunks and branches.

Lake House Arts Centre runs these events every two years. The wood comes from trees felled during road works and other construction and is stockpiled to dry in the garden of the Arts Centre on Barry’s Point Reserve, Takapuna. The event is sponsored by Gardening Aids, North Shore City Council, Treecare Services and the Becroft Foundation.

The public is invited and welcome to come and see the sculptors at work in the gardens that surround the 110 year old Lake House. Every day between 9am and 4pm artists will be working to meet the deadline to finish their work. Watching the work progress each day from its raw state to finished art is fascinating.

The completed sculptures will be judged on Sunday 22 April and the exhibition will be officially opened at 3pm that day, when the works will be for sale. An exhibition in Lake House Gallery of other smaller works by the participating artists will also be open during the carving week, and until 13 May, while the major exhibition remains in the garden. Invited guest judge this year is Dr Richard Shortland-Cooper.
