Arch Hill tell us that David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights have recently returned from a sold out Australian tour with Yo La Tengo, playing a number of their own side shows along the way. The album ‘The Far Now’ was released with an Australasian bonus disc on Arch Hill/Remote Control. Every Night during the Yo La Tengo encore set David joined them on stage to play a different Clean song. Don McGlashan and the Seven Sisters played to an estimated 60,000 people at the launch of AK07, which was quite a crowd packed into the Auckland Domain. dDub are touring Australia in April, to coincide their with their debut album ‘Awake at Dawn’ being released there through Shock Records. Antix are currently on a 10 date tour of Brazil, and are in high demand worldwide as the 2 brothers are booked for plenty of gigs on the European festival circuit starting late June. This will also double up as a release tour for their new LP titled ‘Wanderers’ which is due for release in Europe in late June and in NZ in September.

The Ruby Suns completed a successful tour of the UK, doing two support tours - one with the Holloways (with most venues sold out - around 350-400 people per gig) and one with Field Music. They are currently touring Europe and have received a warm reception, especially in Sweden, the home of ‘indie pop musik’.

Intergalactic have announced that entries are now open for the New Zealand division of the World Battle of the Bands. 2006 saw around 400 bands, performing in 30 venues, almost 200 shows, in eight countries. More countries added for the 2007 competition are to be announced soon.

Richie Campbell of Kahu Records recently visited Kahu Records International Director Dave Graham in Tokyo and he reports that the label have some exciting developments ahead. They now have distribution through Tower Records and HMV for the South Pacific; deals with retails outlets such as the New Zealand Travel Café in Roppongi, thanks to the assistance of Tourism New Zealand; live venues in Tokyo are being secured; radio and TV access is happening; digital relationships are being forged.

Chistchurch’s Dukes have won the NZ leg of the Australasian MTV ‘Kickstart’ competition, and they came second in the overall Australasian competition against five of Australia's top unsigned bands, which was decided by Internet vote. The band will also perform in an MTV Mile High Gig on a sold-out plane en route to the MTV Australian Video Awards. Pig Out, also from Christchurch, are releasing a new EP, 'Bak 2 Xtacy Hed Ru5h', in Australia on April 21 on Bhang Records, and will be are supporting it with a 6-date Australian tour. Before they leave for Oz, the band play 5 national shows to celebrate the EP’s New Zealand release. 4 Corners’ album ‘Foundations’ was released in Australia on February 24 on Grindin’ Records, and to mark this the crew have been tearing up a few Australian clubs on their release tour.

Pacific Curls release their second album ‘Pacific Swing’ on Mai Music in the next month or so. The 3-piece all-woman band are currently on tour in Australia, where they are performing and doing workshops on the outdoor festival circuit. Pacific Curls combine the ukulele, taonga puoro of various types, percussion, drums and vocal harmonies. Their first album ‘Mothersline’ has sold over 2000 units over the past 2 years, not least because of the band’s rigorous tour schedule.

one million dollars (Tardus) are playing in Sydney from the 26th to the 29th of April; and upon their return to Auckland they’ll be going into The Lab to begin recording album number three, tentatively titled ‘Stand Up to the Shakedown’.

Justin ‘Jackhammer’ Niessen has joined Tainted to take over frontman/vocal duties, with former vocalist Nick King focusing on guitar. Jackhammer hails formally from 8 Foot Sativa and performed guest vocals on Tainted's debut album, ‘The Awakening’. Tainted’s new lineup performed live for the first time at the 15th birthday celebrations for Christchurch death metal legends Human.

Kora have reached platinum status, having sold over 10,000 copies of their debut EP 'Volume'. Produced and independently released by Kora, and distributed in New Zealand by Border Music, ‘EP Volume’ was recorded at the infamous 'Surgery' by Dr Lee Prebble (Trinity Roots, Black Seeds, Phoenix Foundation) and mastered at the 'Drop' by Mu from Fat Freddy's Drop.

Flip Grater is releasing her third single from ‘Cage For a Song’, Everybody Else Is Busy Mess. Logan McMillan of Christchurch production company Gorilla Pictures shot the video; the last time Grater teamed up with him was for the video to Grater's previous single, This Road Leads Home, which got into the finals of Radio Active's Handle the Jandal music video competition in 2006. Turning down the opportunity to travel to the 2007 SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas, Flip is currently putting together a band to take on tour around New Zealand in May.

Luke Hurley's 'Best of' came out March 21 and contains 18 tracks from his 25 year recording career. Luke will be playing 45 gigs between now and the end of June. Monkey Records have also just signed Tim Guy for his next album to be released later in the year, which he is currently recording with Anika Moa and Anna Coddington.

The Tweeks began life as The Gladeyes back in 2002, but changed their name to The Tweeks to avoid confusion with Auckland’s Gladeyes. Their debut album ‘You Can Listen Too’ is out now on Borderline Recordings. Mastered in the USA by Roger Seibel (Pavement, Death Cab for Cutie, Cat Power), the first single, London Street, was a finalist in the Radio Active Handle the Jandal Video awards in 2006. The band will tour New Zealand starting late March and going through to late April.
