Media release for immediate use 14 April 2007

Boyce Pulps The Competition At The 2007 $20,000 Christchurch Casino Celebrity Challenge For Charity

On a night when all the stars came out to play, the twinkle in Pulp Sport’s Ben Boyce’s eye shined the brightest.

Boyce was able to beat off challenges from nine other celebrities in the 2007 $20,000 Christchurch Casino Celebrity Challenge for Charity, that kicked off the New Zealand Poker Championships at Christchurch Casino.

On his way to victory Boyce took down Brooke Howard-Smith to win the $20,000 prize. Others to fall by the way side included Kerre Woodham, Leigh Hart, Toni Marsh, Laural Barrett, Rico Gear, Brendon Cole, Bill and Aja Rock.

The tournament pitted the stars against each other in a winner takes all charity tournament, with Boyce’s chosen charity, the Rambo Charitable Trust, the real winner on the night.

“The Rambo Charitable Trust truly is a great organisation that helps many at risk kids achieve new goals in life through encouraging active participation in sporting pursuits,” he says

“My goal tonight was to beat Brooke Howard-Smith and to win the tournament for the Trust was a real bonus. Brooke was like a yappy terrier all night so it was great to take him down at the end.”

Christchurch Casino Gaming Manager Peter Arbuckle says, “Ben played like an absolute champion tonight. He had some good cards and with some smart betting was able to take out the title.”

Trustee of the Rambo Charitable Trust Rewi Manahi says he was absolutely ecstatic with Ben’s performance.

The $20,000 Celebrity Poker Challenge for Charity launches the festival week of poker at Christchurch Casino that culminates with the $500,000* New Zealand Poker Championships Main Event from 19-21 April.
