MIT’s PR students putting theory into practice

May 2007 sees NZ Music month kicking off, celebrating the spirit of New Zealand music.

The Manukau Institute of Technology, along with its third year Public Relations students have decided to do their bit to promote local talent which comes in the form of a hip hop band called the ‘Unknown MCs’.

Students, Manuel Potoru and Vineet Parashar from the communication school at M.I.T will be putting what they learn in class into practice. Their goal for the month of May is to organize a lunch time concert at MIT’s, North campus.

Unknown MCs have been scheduled to perform at MIT on the 10th of May, between 12 to 1 pm and hope to give students and staff a taste of their distinctive style of music

Hailing from West Auckland, ‘Unknown MCs’ is made up of Shannon (Demo), Ataera and Kyle (Kaos), who are exactly what they say they are, a bunch of unknowns with a whole lot of potential.

They have been writing and producing hip hop since 2003, performing over 50 gigs throughout Auckland and Hamilton and have recorded more than 60 songs. One of their goals for 2007, Shannon (Demo) says, is to record an album with new members, ‘Rams’ and ‘Synteck’. They will, however, continue to perform at gigs because they believe their forte is ‘powerful live performances’.

‘UNKNOWN MCs’ are part of a wave of Hip Hop artists emerging from West Auckland, with groups who include, DRS, Fourth Element, Albino, Full Eclipse and Critical Methods, all of whom have their own distinctive styles of Hip Hop.

MIT’s public relations students will be working with ‘Unknown MCs’ to send to its audience the positive messages that their lyrics speak out aloud. They are helping ‘Unknown MCs’ take their music to the next level, giving them the exposure they need and want.

A part of the organizing for the concert was looking for sponsorship and the PR students didn’t have to go far, thanks to MIT and Four Square who will be providing free lunch for all those who come to the show. There will be free give away CD’s featuring up and coming singer Natalie Jones and rap group DRS inclusive. Prizes and goodies sponsored by Bennett’s book store will be a highlight for those eager to partake in the competitions.
