Council Announces New Chief Executive
A passion for books and a flair for literary marketing are just two of the traits possessed by the New Zealand Book Council’s new Chief Executive, Noel Murphy.
A former Marketing Director of British publishing house, Faber and Faber Ltd, he has been working in the book industry since 1991, and brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
Murphy says he
is eager to grow awareness of the organisation’s unique
role in New Zealand, and is looking forward to developing
relationships with Book Council partners, authors,
publishers, literary organisations and the reading public.
‘I’m very privileged to be joining the Book Council
at this point in it’s successful history, and hugely
excited about the opportunity to help shape it’s
future.’
Chair of the Book Council Board, Maggie Barry, said the Board was impressed by Murphy’s enthusiasm and his credentials. ‘In the year we celebrate our 35th birthday, we are delighted to welcome someone of Noel’s calibre to lead the team, and look forward to working with him to take the Book Council into its next era.’
Among Murphy’s numerous achievements, he has conceived, planned and delivered critically acclaimed website Bloomsbury.com, managed campaigns for well known authors, developed brand strategies, and been part of the senior management team that guided Faber and Faber to win Publisher of the Year 2006.
He has also been involved in not-for-profit organisations, working on a range of projects from library support to adult literacy.
Noel Murphy will take up his new position on Monday 28 May. He replaces former Book Council Chief Executive, Karen Ross.
