Mystic Truths - Exhibition at AucklandArt Gallery
Media Release – 18 June 2007
Mystic Truths
A spellbinding new exhibition opening at Auckland Art Gallery next Friday explores the prevalence of mysticism in contemporary art.
Mystic Truths plays on the tension between our desire to experience the unknown and our inherent scepticism.
* A tree reader tells fortunes in a work by Mikala Dwyer
* Dane Mitchell carries out paranormal investigations of the New Gallery and has a witch cast a spell on the building
* Olivia Plender performs tales from her cult comic The Masterpiece
* Artists carry out a reality TV-style investigation into the haunting of holiday hut No. 13
This intriguing show features 17 acclaimed international artists including Annette Messager (France), Loris Gréaud (France), Joachim Koester (Denmark), Jennifer Tee (Netherlands) and Thomas Zipp (Germany).
The title is taken from American artist Bruce Nauman's 1967 neon sign (below) which states: "The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths".
One of the key works of the late 20th century, this often quoted but seldom seen pop icon will be displayed in the Wellesley St window of the New Gallery.
