Gardening industry announces winner of 2007 Carann Young Achiever award

Napier botanist Meredith Guy has been named 2007 Carann Young Achiever of the Year by the gardening industry.

The future of New Zealand’s gardening industry in is great hands, if the latest crop of young achievers is any indication.

25-year-old Napier botanist Meredith Guy has been named the 2007 Carann Young Achiever of the Year by the New Zealand Nursery and Garden Industry Association.

A finalist in 2006, Meredith Guy holds a degree in plant biology from Massey University and is the Group Technical Manager for Gro Pacific and Acting Manager of Pacific Bark in Hawke’s Bay.

“Meredith is confident, extremely competent and has an impressive level of industry knowledge. She is highly regarded by her employers and is already considered a lynchpin employee by her company,” says awards judge Heather Morine, National Sales and Marketing Manager for Carann.

For the first time in the competition’s history, all of the finalists held bachelor’s degrees.

The two other finalists were Kate McDougal of Waimea Nurseries in Nelson and Jason Greene of Rainbow Trees in South Auckland.

The Carann Young Achiever award is open to those employed in the nursery and garden industry sector aged under 30, with more than three years experience.

“With such enthusiastic, high calibre entrants, we can all be assured that the future of the gardening industry is in great hands. We are committed to growing and nurturing these young people to keep them within our industry,” says Morine.
