Primary Referents at Outreach Gallery

Primary Referents
9th July – 10th August 2007.

An exhibition exploring the base areas of inquiry in the art of the participating artists
- tutors from the Manukau School of Visual Arts, Manukau Technical Institute.
Facilitated by: Chris Mules, Fear Brampton, Geoff Tune
Designers: Lydia Elliot, Mark McClean

E- North is proud to present Primary Referents’, an exhibition which explores the base areas of inquiry in the art of the participating artists - a show and tell exhibition which offers a glimpse of what lies at the base of the artists’ practice – the primary subjects, images, themes, issues, visual concerns and/or contexts, which have driven artistic expression. As such the exhibition is intended to offer a space for the re-examination of the well-springs of personal practice; for the audience a glimpse into the interior spaces of head and heart. The exhibition offers too, potentially, a cohering perspective on the interconnections within an artist’s practice. The theme foregrounds a snapshot–like diversity of individualism within community.

Primary Referents is also intended as a glace at the microcosm of the (MSVA) visual arts community’s visual cultural referents in this place and this time. The participating artists living and working in Auckland, Aotearoa - New Zealand’s most culturally diverse city (and working in Otara, South Auckland) incorporated local and international, rural and urban, cultural and ethnic elements intending to reflect the confluence of factors which are shaping contemporary New Zealand life, identity and psyche.

Artists include:

Martin Ball, Fear Brampton, Luke Bell-Booth, Eldon Booth, Deborah Crowe, John Collie, Frances Hansen, Sally Hollis-McLeod, Paul Johnston, Tessa Laird, Steve Lovett, Mark McClean, Phil McKibbin, Emma McLellen, Ross Malcolm, Alex Monteith, Steve Moore, Chris Mules, Bill Riley, Louise Stevenson and Geoff Tune.
