This week marks the start of a new era for NZ musicians, bands and technical professionals. www.downstream.co.nz is open for business.

The website allows any musician, technical professional or band, anywhere in the country, to register their expertise and talent online. So people looking for say a new bass player for their band, or a sound-man to run the desk at their next gig, or a band to play at a party or wedding need only log-on to www.downstream.co.nz and they’re in business.

It’s completely free for musicians, bands and technical people to register and let people know they’re out there. It’s national and it means a whole new era in networking for people at the pointy end of the industry.

It’s as simple as going to the home page and either registering as a user, with your own unique log-on and pass-word, or starting a search if you’re looking for services.The categories are all accessed via pull down menus making it easy to find someone in a geographic area , or by the instrument they play, the technical service they provide, or the type of and they are and how much they charge. The whole concept couldn’t be easier.
The site also includes a chatroom so musicians can network, and there’ll be a regular newsletter for those who’ve signed up.

The site is the brainchild of Tony Doe, a long-time musician who was trying to put a new band together after moving back to NZ from London. Tony went to Christchurch where he didn’t know anyone, and found it very hard to locate like minded musicians. So he decided to start downstream. He’s being assisted by his son Jared who is just launching his musical career.

The site is being well supported by Music store giant Musicworks, and MAINZ, the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand. Tony and Jared have big plans for downstream, with the site eventually being able to take MP3 files of bands and individual musician’s playing, and long term an online record label and store. The pair are hoping NZ musicians will get behind it, and eventually advertisers will support it so it can add extra services.
