Springfield, NZ: Today was a day to remember for the town of Springfield, New Zealand, where about 3000 people celebrated the upcoming release of The Simpsons Movie in true country style.

Springfield Railway Station was crammed with excited children (and adults) as Homer & Bart arrived on the Transalpine Express to a rousing welcome from the Darfield High School Kapahaka group.

The beloved Simpsons Movie characters took a leading role in the unveiling of a town icon – a giant, bright pink ..donut – presented to the town by Twentieth Century Fox and Gracie Films in recognition of the special connection to the Simpsons family’s hometown fictional Springfield. The donut was chosen because, as Homer’s favourite food, the donut is the symbol of the film.

The 3.5 metre diameter donut was constructed in Christchurch by local artist Steve Trevella. www.woodworx.co.nz

The town (population 300) was buzzing with market day activity as locals turned on a light-hearted celebration which included vintage cars, fire engine rides, jet boat trips and a range of children’s entertainment.

The Simpsons Movie opens in cinemas all over New Zealand on July 26.
