Raising Voices for Hospice
New Zealanders may have sent a ‘roar’ across the world to cheer the All Blacks on in the World Cup but Nelsonians are raising more tuneful voices in support of the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust. 'Voices for Hospice' acknowledges World Hospice and Palliative care day, and conductor Colleen Marshall says it involves choirs right across the globe.
“This event was initiated by the Hospice movement in Great Britain and many choirs all around the world now take part. It’s significant for us in Nelson because it starts in New Zealand on Oct 6th and then continues internationally,” Colleen says.
Voices for Hospice supporters in over 60 countries are using choral concerts to help fund raise and draw attention to their vital work. In Nelson Colleen says seven choirs are combining for two concerts to be held over a weekend.
“This will be a lovely occasion and a great opportunity to enjoy the rich variety of choral activity in the Nelson Region. It’s a special event that combines a range of singers from Barbershop to Maori and male voice to world choirs. It’s a must for anyone interested in choral music.”
The concerts will feature individual choir items
and two major combined works, 'The Hallelujah Chorus' from
the Messiah, conducted by Pete Rainey and 'How Lovely are
Thy Dwellings' from the Brahms Requiem, conducted by
Colleen Marshall.
Singers in the audience are invited to bring along their Messiah scores and to join in with the combined choirs' performance. accompanied by the pipe organ. Thanks to Nelson College the concerts will be held in the college assembly hall and a group of volunteers from the ANZ Bank doing front of house under their policy to assist in community events.
The seven Nelson choirs taking part are: the Nelson Civic Choir, Nelson Male Voice Choir, Richmond Choral Group, Mosaic World Choir, Maori Singers, Barbershop Singers, and the Golden Bay Singers.
The concerts are on Sat Oct 6 at 7.30pm and Sun Oct 7 at 2.00pm. Tickets available from the Nelson School of Music and online at www.nsom.ac.nz $20.00 adults, $15.00 seniors and students and children are free.
