Fast-growing New Zealand based gourmet burger retailer BurgerFuel has just handed over $17,000 cash to local band Surf City.

BurgerFuel donated10c from every burger sold in the New Zealand music month of May to the BurgerFuel Artist Recording Fund (B.A.R.F) to assist a budding Kiwi musician or group to further their careers.

Marketing Manager, Aaron Carson, says music is a huge part of the BurgerFuel experience and features heavily in BurgerFuel stores.

“We wanted to do something for the local music scene that really benefited up and coming New Zealand bands. We also wanted to let the public decide who should get the $17,000. This is as much about introducing new New Zealand music to people as it is about helping out a particular band.” says Mr Carson.

Eleven bands have made the shortlist and after a close battle, the people spoke and Surf City were the victors.

Mr Carson says voting took place in all BurgerFuel stores in New Zealand from Monday 13th August until 16th September and every person who voted went into the draw to win an $11,000 stereo. Paul Hughs a 20 year old engineer from Howick won the stereo.

The votes placed the bands in the following order 1: Surf City 2: Cut Off Your Hands 3: The Ruby Suns 4: The Whipping Cats 5: White Birds and Lemons 6: Labretta Suede and The Motel Six 7: Holiday with Friends 8: The Vietnam War 9: Artisan Guns 10: Collapsing Cities 11: The Bengal Lights.

Surf City manager Jo McAlpine says the money will be a huge help. “ we’re wrapped, the cash has already been earmarked for purchasing a new band vehicle, recording equipment, instruments and also for covering upcoming touring costs.

BurgerFuel hope to make B.A.R.F an annual event and look forward to helping grow the awareness of new New Zealand music and helping bands reach their goals.
