Ngatiwai Kiore Harvest

The Ngatiwai Kiore Harvest has come again. In its efforts to maintain ecological balance on the offshore islands, Ngatiwai Trust Board Resource Management Unit are managing a second harvest from Taranga (Hen) Island and Mauitaha (West Chicken) Island.

Both contemporary and customary trapping and processing methods will be utilised. The pelts from the kiore will be utilised as a cloak for Ngatiwai.

Ngatiwai Kiore Harvest Manager, Clive Stone says the event is a significant one for the country.

“The Harvest will assist in raising awareness of the taonga species that was transported to this country by our tupuna.”

“Volunteers will also have the opportunity to learn about tuatara, manu oi (shearwater petrels), korora (little blue penguins), and numerous other species that are seldom found on the mainland,” says Ms Shortland.

Participants, including Whangaruru Environmental Studies students have already attended presentations on lizards, kiore, and bio-security of offshore islands, at the Board.

The harvest starts with a karakia on Monday 19 November and finishes with a hakari at Ngatiwai Trust Board Monday 10 December.
