Robbie Deans to kick off Sallies' Christchurch appeal

Christchurch, 30 April 2008. - Crusaders Rugby Team coach Robbie Deans will address up to 200 Christchurch business leaders tomorrow (1 May) as part of the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal.

Robbie Deans will give the keynote address at a corporate breakfast at the Holiday Inn - City Centre in Christchurch. The event also marks 125 years of Salvation Army service to the New Zealand community.

Assistant Territorial Public Relations Secretary, Major Jeff Winterburn, says that the Salvation Army spent more than $44m last year caring for and transforming the lives of people in need around New Zealand.

'This year we estimate the cost of caring to have increased to $49m dollars. Some of this cost is met through contracted services, but we're still dependent on donations to deliver our full network of essential community services.

'These services include foodbanks, budgeting advice, counseling, life and parenting skills, alcohol and drug treatment, problem gambling programmes, help for at-risk youth, support for seniors, supportive accommodation, emergency services, and courts and prisons chaplaincy.

'This year we need to raise $7.5m -- up from the more than $6.8m given last year - to maintain our community services.'

Major Winterburn says Robbie's drive and passion shines through in everything he does and he will be an inspirational speaker.

'Robbie and his team have previously shown their strong community spirit by supplying volunteers to man the Salvation Army's Street Outreach Service in Christchurch.'
