Cambridge honours its rowing heroes

Cambridge – home to most of the New Zealand rowing squad – will honour its world beating rowers with a special parade through the streets of the town this Friday.

Organisers hope that most, if not all of the top rowers will be in attendance at the event, which will provide a chance for local people to show their appreciation for the team, who have trained on nearby Lake Karapiro more or less twice every day for the past four years. The parade will begin at 2 pm on Friday 29th from the Cambridge Town Hall.

The group will include the gold medal winning Evers-Swindell twins Caroline and Georgina, bronze medal winning single sculler Mahe Drysdale and bronze medal winning pair George Bridgewater and Nathan Twaddle. All of the crews in the team were inside the top ten, with a fourth, a fifth, two seventh and a ninth place finish as well as the medal winners. The event is being organised by Waipa District Council, Cambridge and Rowing New Zealand.

Waipa Mayor Alan Livingstone, a big fan and supporter of the rowing team, said: “We will welcome the team home in style. They are huge ambassadors for New Zealand and for sport, and they are Cambridge residents as well. We’re very proud of all of them and I’m sure everyone will come out to give them a proper welcome home.”
