Human Rights Commission marks 60th anniversary

Art takes centre stage when the Human Rights Commission marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10.

To celebrate the UN’s adoption of this global taonga in 1948 — and Human Rights Day — the Commission has sponsored an art exhibition, Article 27. The exhibition, at Northart Gallery in Northcote, Auckland, from 10-24 December, features the work of seven artists who explore aspects of human rights.

The art of dispute resolution is highlighted in a new Commission report showcasing the work of its mediation-based Enquiries and Complaints Service team. Te Rito, which will be released on Human Rights Day, December 10, outlines cases handled by the mediators. They help parties explore issues arising out of unlawful discrimination complaints.

The Commission is also supporting a conference bringing together legal and human rights experts at Victoria University’s New Zealand Centre for Public Law. The Wellington conference, which also marks the anniversary of the Declaration will take place on December 9 and 10.
