Givealittle.co.nz welcomes Kiwi optimism – and growing social awareness

Innovative online community Givealittle.co.nz has welcomed a poll showing Kiwis are feeling more optimistic about their finances – and predicted more will be prepared to share.

A new Research New Zealand survey found that more that 50 per cent of people surveyed expected their financial situation to improve in the next 12 months.

Nathalie Hofsteede, Chief Executive of Givealittle.co.nz said: “It is very encouraging that, despite the global credit crunch, New Zealanders have positive expectations for their finances in the coming year. However, there is still a tremendous amount of need out there.

“I believe the international situation has made more individuals and businesses aware of the importance of sustainable communities and we hope they will now look at new ways that they can help.”

Giving can take many forms and Givealittle.co.nz, launched at the end of 2008, provides an online opportunity for any New Zealander with time, money or networks to give to find the best ways to do so – and the best project for them.

Ninety projects and 115 organisations working on behalf of the community have already registered.

They range from some of New Zealand’s most well known charities to small innovative projects. The 17 categories include organisations for youth and children, animal welfare, health and disability and the environment.

Ms Hofsteede said there are already indications, internationally, that some companies are turning difficult trading conditions to their advantage, taking the opportunity to upskill staff and support communities.

“The international construction industry firm Caterpillar is an excellent example of a company that is using the economic downturn to professional and community advantage.

“Due to a drop in orders it is halting production at its Leicestershire, UK, plant for a total of four weeks in February and March. Instead, staff will undergo various training courses and take part in charitable and community based activities.

“Givealittle.co.nz provides many opportunities for any New Zealanders considering similar innovative ways of giving to find something they care about and can get involved with easily.”

Givealittle.co.nz protects member privacy and information while providing donors with the opportunity to receive feedback and communication if required.
