Make a Choice for Earth Hour 2009!
Earth Hour is an opportunity to get together with friends and family, light some candles, turn out the lights, and reflect on what you can do to take action on climate change.
But what kind of difference can you make? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of our current global situation.
“It’s much easier to take action if there is a positive outcome in our day to day lives” is the answer given by Hilary Campbell, director of the ‘Choices’ programme.
‘Choices’ offers participants the chance to prioritise a wellbeing outcome that is relevant for them, and then to find a sustainability or climate change action to suit.
“I chose to save money on shopping by cutting out a couple of trips a week to the supermarket and buying bulk where I can. I am also saving petrol and packaging so I feel I am making a positive contribution to tackling climate change” says Paul of Wellington.
It’s quick and easy to take part, and those who have made their ‘Choice’ have often been surprised by the immediate benefits they have experienced.
“The Choices programme also includes a huge amount of useful information” says Hilary. “Such as where to get subsidised insulation, safe bike routes, how to grow your own veggies and an easy way to make your own DIY double glazing are just a few examples.”
The Choices team will be offering free 1.5 hour introductory sessions in Wellington to celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday 28th March, so come along with a friend or two and find out how easy it is to make a choice the benefits you and your planet: Newtown Community Hall, corner Daniel and Constable Streets, Newtown. Sessions start at 10am (longer 2.5 hour session), 1:30pm or 3:30pm and include a light meal. Please RSVP for catering purposes.
Also keep an eye out for our Choices stall and networkers on Cuba and Manners Malls this Saturday to try Choices out for yourself!
