'Eco-My-Flat' participants to celebrate Earth Hour

As part of the 2009 University of Canterbury 'Eco-My-Flat' competition, a group of students will be celebrating Earth Hour this Saturday night by hosting pot-luck dinners with an eco-friendly twist.

Instead of taking cooked food to the Earth Hour pot-luck dinners, the students will be gathering at participating flats with eco-friendly ingredients and attempting to find the least energy-intensive means of putting a meal together. Afterwards they'll turn everything off for Earth Hour, and enjoy sharing the fruits of their labours.

Sharon McIver, this year's 'Eco-My-Flat' coordinator, will be visiting the flats on Saturday evening. Sharon is available for interviews, and invites local journalists to join her on her visits to some of the flats from 7pm on Saturday night.

The 'Eco-My-Flat' participants are blogging their progress over the competition month - visit www.sustain.canterbury.ac.nz/ecomyflat. The competition closes with an awards night on Tuesday 2 April.

The 'Eco-My-Flat' competition is an initiative first developed last year by students working with University of Canterbury's Sustainability Advocate Dr. Kate Hewson as a means of engaging with students about sustainability. This year, more than 30 flats from the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University are exploring how they can tread more lightly on the planet.
