Warning about the perils of house fires

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Otago Polytechnic Students’ Association

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 09/04/2009

Warning about the perils of house fires

The Otago Polytechnic Students' Association is reminding student tenants and landlords to take steps to avoid house fires in the coming winter.

"Tenants and landlords need to make sure that houses with indoor fires have had the chimney cleared before winter, as otherwise it increases chances of a house fire," said Students' Association Co-Presidents Ryan Ward and Meegan Cloughley today.

"This Easter is also a chance to check smoke alarms in students flats, and make sure that you have an escape plan in place in case of an emergency," Mr Ward continued.

At this time of year, the number of people using indoor fires and electric or gas heaters increases as the temperature drops. OPSA reminds students to be safe when operating these heat sources.

"Be sure to keep combustible materials away from heat sources, and don't leave heaters and such on while away on break," OPSA Co-President Meegan Cloughley added.
