New Exhibitions At Solander

New Exhibitions At Solander

Opening at Solander: works on paper on Thursday 16 April are two exhibitions by printmakers exploring their themes with gusto. Both artists work on a large scale and in a manner that channels their energies – offerings run from the gritty to the sublime. We give you Mark Graver and Locust Jones….

16 April - 16 May Mark Graver: New Prints
Mark Graver’s fluid lines burst with energy as ink marks drip and flare across his work. This exhibition of new etchings showcases his large gestural, abstract works in three series; ‘Nymphèas’ the first, is inspired by Monet’s water lily paintings from the Orangerie in Paris. The subsequent ‘Minerva’ series pays a tribute to the goddess of arts (and wisdom), and his ‘Blackbird’ series celebrates the artist’s memory of hearing blackbird song in the evenings as a child.

Mark is a proponent of non-toxic printmaking methods, a practicing artist and lecturer at NorthTec in Whangarei.

Special Event: Mark Graver will present a talk on his latest works at 5pm, Thursday 16th April – before the exhibition opening. All welcome.

16 April - 16 May Locust Jones: What a Way to Go

Wielding his cutting knife like a weapon, Locust Jones brings us new woodcuts commenting on political events and delving into his subconscious. Jones, originally from Canterbury and now based in Sydney, produces large-scale, charged works that demand us to stop and consider the state of the world he reflects. Beginning with ink drawings, which are then cut into woodblocks nearing a metre in size, Jones produces work that exposes media structures and Geo-political systems in a confronting and personal way.
