Johnston to boost Commonwealth Games Medal Chances

Press Release
14 April 2009

Johnston to boost Commonwealth Games Medal Chances

In a newly created NZASNI role supported by SPARC, Lyn Johnston will lead the Squash NZ and Bowls NZ high performance programmes in the build up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games, with the primary objective of achieving medal winning performances.

Lyn is no stranger to achieving medal winning performances having coached two gymnasts to Commonwealth Games Gold and Bronze Medal success.

Lyn Johnston brings a wealth of high performance sport experience to this position, notably her role as Coach of the New Zealand Gymnastic Team for 18 years.

She has also provided extensive leadership and coaching consultancy within the corporate sector.

Lyn’s broad contribution to high performance sport includes her previous roles as President of Coaching NZ, Chair of the SFRITO Sports Advisory Committee, and NZASNI Coach Support Adviser.

Lyn is looking forward to being part of Bowls NZ and Squash NZ programmes. “Bowls and Squash have proud histories in Commonwealth Games. Both programmes are coach led and I see my initial role as being to find out what is required to ensure that the athletes and coaches are clear on what they need to do to be at their best in Delhi and how I can support them to achieve that. I have worked successfully with Bowls before and am now also looking forward to connecting with the Squash high performance community and adding as much as I can” said Lyn Johnston.

Lyn’s previous work with Bowls NZ has included the development and implementation of their coach development programme as well as culture and team development with the 2008 World Championship Team.

“We are delighted to have Lyn in this position. She has worked extensively with Bowls NZ in the past and her professionalism is admired by us all” said Kerry Clark, Bowls NZ Chief Executive.

These thoughts were echoed by Squash NZ. "This unique partnership offers Squash affordable access to Lyn's experience and knowledge. I am looking forward to seeing Lyn add value to our high performance programme" said Mike Thompson, Squash NZ Chief Executive.

Lyn’s major contribution to sport was recognized when she was awarded an MBE for services to sport.
