Top NZ snowsports programme open for enrolments

Aspiring snowsport professionals can turn their passion into their career with a leading programme based in Central Otago, New Zealand.

Run by Otago Polytechnic, the Wanaka-based programme starts on 18 May and is a unique and cost-effective way to gain a certificate in snowsports instruction.

Students can enrol for either the Certificate in Snowsport Instructing (Ski or Snowboard) or the Certificate in Avalanche Safety Management and Snowsport Instructing (Ski or Snowboard).

Otago Polytech Adventure Programme Manager Peter Bilous says there’s real demand for more instructors from the snow sport industry.

“As far as I’m aware there are no other courses in New Zealand, or anywhere else in the world, that offer this type of programme for would-be snowsport instructors.

“As part of their course, students gain work experience at Cardrona Alpine Resort, shadowing highly skilled and experienced instructors before taking sole charge of lessons.”

Otago Polytech is also a leading provider of avalanche safety training in New Zealand and is responsible for issuing NZ Mountain Safety Council (NZMSC) certificates in avalanche safety.

“I just came back from two months in Canada where I took part in an international snow science workshop and an advanced professional avalanche programme to ensure our training is to the highest international standards," says Mr Bilous.

“We recently earned the exclusive right to use the CAA’s world-wide respected resources to deliver our Stage 2 Avalanche Safety programme on behalf of the NZMSC.  Our first course ran at the end of last year in Wanaka.

“The course was the designed and developed through extensive industry consultation to meet New Zealand’s needs. We looked worldwide for solutions before adopting and adapting the Canadian material.  Another benefit has been re-establishing close relationships with Canada’s top professionals.  It really does mean our students are getting the very best resources and training in the world.”

Mr Bilous says not only is Central Otago a hub for snowsports with a four major ski fields within an hour’s drive, the lifestyle is also a huge drawcard for students and residents.

“The lifestyle is phenomenal – you want to pinch yourself every day.  There’s the picture postcard scenery, the friendly people, the massive range of outdoor activities, the amazing food and wine, and so much more.”

Central Otago Polytech’s snowsports courses have been on offer for almost 10 years.  Forty six students graduated from the programmes in October last year.
