Hurricanes and CA Brumbies Rugby Challenge - on and off the field

Which team will win the Anzac Day match? Which jersey will raise more funds for the Computers in Homes 100,000 Challenge?

The rivalry between the CA Brumbies and the Wellington Hurricanes will continue beyond the Anzac Day match on 25 April, with a charity auction of rare signed jerseys concluding the following day.

The funds raised will help Computers in Homes bring education and employment opportunities to low-income families by providing them with information and communication technology and training.

In the Anzac spirit, the rival teams have donated framed, signed jerseys that are now being auctioned in a special section of Trade Me, www.trademe.co.nz/2020

The Wellington Hurricanes jersey is the current 2009 season jersey. Two CA Brumbies jerseys are also on auction; one from their runner-up 2002 season in the Super 12, and the other jersey from the 2008 Super 14 season.

The auction was initiated by CA, proud sponsors of the Brumbies since 1997 and the 2020 Communications Trust’s Computers in Homes programme.

Computers in Homes estimates that more than 100,000 New Zealand families with school-aged children in low-income communities still don’t have a computer and internet access at home.

The programme has recently launched the 100,000 Challenge which aims to connect the 100,000 remaining families without a computer in their homes and ensure all parents have the digital literacy to support their children’s learning.

“Meeting the Challenge will enable the New Zealand families currently without ICT skills to enjoy the benefits of technology that most now take for granted, such as banking online or booking a cheap airfare,” said Laurence Zwimpfer of the 2020 Communications Trust. “We are grateful to the CA Brumbies and the Hurricanes for their donations and to CA for their continued support,” he continued.

The auction will close at 9pm on Sunday 26 April at www.trademe.co.nz/2020

Rugby supporters are encouraged to dig extra deep and bid on these items of sports memorabilia as all funds raised will go towards helping Computers in Homes meet the 100,000 Challenge.

“As Brumbies or Hurricanes supporters we might not be able to influence the outcome of the match on Anzac day, but we can certainly demonstrate our support by making sure we are not out-bid by our trans-Tasman rivals,” Mr Zwimpfer concluded.

About Computers in Homes
Computers in Homes started in the year 2000 and has already supported more than 4,000 New Zealand families with recycled computers, six months of free internet access, computer training and technical support, via their local schools.

Parents receive 20 hours of basic computer training including word processing, emailing and using the Internet, conducted at their children’s school.

The training is aimed at empowering parents to become actively involved in their children’s learning, as well as increasing their own employment opportunities and confidence. Results from the programme have included employment success and continued education. The programme has also seen a number of parents actively engaging with their school for the first time.

Computers in Homes is an initiative of the 2020 Communications Trust with support from the Ministry of Education and the Community Partnership Fund. The 2020 Communications Trust is looking for funding and support to expand Computers in Homes to all low-income communities where children do not have access to computers and the Internet in their homes.
