One-off special show for NZ Music Month
Batucada Sound Machine to Collaborate with Tama Waipara, Jennifer Zea, Bex Peterson
Where: Club 4:20, 272 K Rd, Auckland When: Friday 22 May
Be witness to some genre-defying collaborations, as BSM and guests deliver what promises to be a stunning night of dance, soul, afro-grooves and latin goodness. Ay moleque!
BSM are stoked to announce a one-off special show for NZ Music Mth, and they are bringing in a buncah of very special friends to share the stage with.
Its an idea that band leader James Hughes has been wanting to get going for a while and decided this would be an ideal opportunity. “We thought that what better time than NZ Music Mth - to present some new music with some of our favourite vocalists”. Having recently been to shows featuring Tama Waipara, Bex Peterson and Jennifer Zea , James immediately thought that these people would add some real colour to the already rich music of BSM.
“There’s so much you can do with the variety of percussion and melodic instrumentation that the band has. We are currently about to start rehearsing, but already I’m hearing a big samba-reggae number underneath Tama’s beautiful vocals…but who knows what we may come up with.” BSM are no stranger to collaborations, with Che Fu, Kevin Field and Lewis McCallum all appearing on their last album ‘Rhythm and Rhyme’. “Its something we all enjoy doing and helps to keep the band and the music fresh.
A bit about the lineup below: Tama Waipara: A graduate from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music with a Master's degree in music and performance clarinet, Tama is one of NZ’s established vocal talents. His vocals are tenuous, dusky, supple and bittersweet, possessing a distinctive intonation and 'phraseology' inspired legendary vocalists like George Benson, Bill Withers, Jimmy Scott, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder …to name a few. Tama has recently released an album under his alter-ego moniker of Sir Plus & The Requirements.
Jennifer Zea: Jennifer is a recently arrived, Latin jazz singer originally from Venezuela, via LA, Detroit, New York and Puerto Rico. She has shared the stage with renowned performers of the European and South American Jazz and World music scene, such as Nicolas Folmer, Pablo Gil and Djalma Correa. This experience has taken her from playing in Festivals and prestigious venues in Caracas, to Rio de Janeiro, Paris and Melbourne. She currently performs regularly in Auckland with her prestigious band with members such as Kevin Haines, Kevin Field, Dixon Nacey and Tony Hopkins.
Bex Peterson: Auckland-based Bex Peterson needs no introduction. Having performed in and around New Zealand for the past 7 years she has established herself as one of the leading jazz and neo-soul vocalists on the circuit. Having performed under various solo guises and with One Million Dollars, she is now currently working on her debut solo album.
And what can people expect on the night? According to James, anything is possible. But expect to see these fantastic vocalists go places they may not have gone before, with styles of music that may not be so familiar to them – dangerous? Yes. But sure to be inspiring to say the least. So, this night will be one to mark now in your calendar. Do not miss it!
