FIRST OTAGO CAREERS FESTIVAL A BIG SUCCESS
Organisers of the inaugural Otago Careers Festival are looking forward to a well-deserved rest after a successful month of over 70 career-related events taking place around the region. The Festival reached all sectors of the community, including secondary school students and their parents, people seeking a career change, those who have been made redundant and migrants. Events included the Coca-Cola Careers Expo, Telford Open Day, Otago Polytechnic seminars and a wide range of talks and information sessions.
‘Dressing For Success’, held at Shop On Carroll, was a huge hit according to Chrissy Anderson, retail manager for Presbyterian Support. A large number of people seeking to return to work and wanting to look well-presented attended the event, and feedback has been extremely positive. “A wide range of people of all ages and circumstances came to the event, and many said it was well-organised, informative and that they picked up a lot of great ideas from the speakers,” Chrissy Anderson said.
‘An Inside Look into Medical Imaging’, held at the Radiology Department of Dunedin Hospital, also had a good number of attendees. “It was really popular and we now have eight people who want to come and have a closer look around and do work-shadowing for half a day,” said Tracy Holgate, Charge Radiographer of Outpatients.
Festival Co-ordinator Victoria Bunton was pleased with the amount of interest in the Festival events. “From CV workshops to open days and career expos to seminars, the Festival included something for everyone no matter what stage they were at with their career development. At this stage, subject to the post-event evaluations and future funding, we are certain the Careers Festival does meet a real need here in Otago and is likely to become an annual event.”
