Closet knitters come out of their homes and into public view to celebrate World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKiP Day) next month.
In 2005 American fibre enthusiast, Danielle Landes organised the first World Wide Knit in Public Day to help bring the knitting community together on a large scale. In the first year 25 events were held around the world, and by 2008, two hundred locations celebrated the day.
The Nelson Creative Fibre Guild is marking the largest knitter run event in the world by holding open days at the Elma Turner Library in Nelson during library hours over the weekend of 13 -14 June, Guild committee member Linda Cleary says around twelve guild members will be knitting, spinning and crocheting.
“Knitting can be a solitary act but World Wide Knit in Public day is a very distinct way to show the general public that knitting can be a community activity,”
WWKiP Day is also an opportunity to encourage younger people to take up knitting, or other fibre crafts. Linda says it’s not only grannies who knit but it’s the grannies that have a wealth of knitting knowledge to share.
“Knitting seems to have skipped a few generations but with a greater variety of yarns available now it’s becoming more fashionable and the Nana Craft Group at Victory Community Centre is growing in popularity.”
WWKiP Day takes place on the second Saturday of June each year. In past years events have been held in Australia, China, England, Finland, France, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, United States and more.
The Nelson Creative Fibre Spinning and Weaving Guild meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, 9.30 am in the Jaycee Room, Founders Historic Park. Evening gatherings are every 3rd Tuesday, 7 pm at Fern Lodge, 113 Nile Street, Nelson.
