2009 Winner, Isaac Jourdain, accepting his prize

Monday 8 June 2009: - Whangarei boy Isaac Jourdain, age 8, has been crowned the 2009 National LEGO Building Champion. Run in conjunction with Toyworld stores, the Annual National LEGO Building Competition gives LEGO fans the opportunity to build the model of their dreams and compete to win the amazing prize of a trip to LEGOLAND® California.

The competition ran in Toyworld stores during April and received around 2,000 entries, with models of all shapes and sizes being entered. “The National Building Competition really drives kid’s imagination and creativity; the LEGO experience is all about bricks in hands and it’s amazing what some of the kids design and build.” said Matthew Ott, Country Manager for LEGO New Zealand.

Grand prize winner Isaac wanted to catch the attention of the judges by building something distinctive and came up with the idea of an oil rig. “I wanted to build something different, not just a building”, said the 8 year old. To perfect his design, Isaac spent time researching oil rigs on the internet and in books. The creation, made out of approximately 300 LEGO pieces, took 4 days to build.

The competition grand prize includes return flights to Los Angeles in the USA, five nights accommodation in the luxurious Grand Pacific Palisades Resort & Hotel, located next door to LEGOLAND, admission for four people to the LEGOLAND theme park for four days, as well as NZD $1,500 spending money.

Accompanying Isaac will be mum Robyn, dad Bryce and 6 year old sister Grace Jourdain. “We are all so excited for Isaac. It’s funny as you enter these competitions thinking you’ll never win and Isaac did. We’re all so proud of him, even people at school are ecstatic”, said Isaac’s mum Robyn Jourdain. The trip to LEGOLAND California will be the first time Isaac has left New Zealand and travelled overseas. “I’m so excited to go to LEGOLAND, the rides look awesome and I can’t wait to go on the plane and swim in the pool at the hotel”, said Isaac.

Matthew Ott, Country Manager of LEGO New Zealand said “The competition not only creates a lot of hype in-store, it creates a buzz for us too and we really enjoy rewarding LEGO fans. Isaac has never travelled overseas before which makes the prize even more special and I am thrilled”.
