2009 New World Wine Awards kicks off

Judging for the 2009 New World Wine Awards kicks off

The top tasting, most affordable wines for sale in New Zealand are about to be put through their paces as judging for the 2009 New World Wine Awards gets underway in Wellington on 28-29 July.

Wines entered into the competition must retail for below $25 per bottle, and there must be at least 500 cases of each wine available for sale.

A total of 1,077 wines have been entered into the awards this year, up from 837 last year. This indicates that winemakers recognise the value of the awards and are keen to have their wines judged directly against their peers by a leading panel of expert wine judges.

“This is a fantastic competition to be involved in, because it really shows off an amazing selection of New Zealand and international wines that are available to consumers at very competitive prices,” says Jim Harré, chair of the 2009 New World Wine Awards judging panel.

“With more people dining in and entertaining at home than ever before it’s great that we are able to take the guess work out of choosing a top wine for a good price.”

The judging panel which is comprised of 12 renowned winemakers, commentators and judges, will complete a two-day blind tasting of the wines. They will work in teams of three to rank the colour, taste and smell of each wine according to the same internationally recognised points system as other leading wine awards.

The judges will award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, and convene to select the best red, white and bubbles overall. The top 50 wines from the full array of medal-winners will be showcased online and in the New World Wine Awards booklet.

“New Zealand in particular has enjoyed some fantastic growing seasons recently with very full production. That, combined with prices which have been trending downwards internationally, means consumers will be in for some real treats with the winning wines,” says Mr Harré.

The award winners will be announced to the public on Monday 21 September, 2009.
