Delve Into F1 Design This Weekend At Te Papa.

There’s a special focus on automotive design on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August, in association with theFormula One ™– The Great Design Raceexhibition (www.tepapa.govt.nz/f1).

The Hulme CanAm ‘Bear 1’ and a Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) will take pride of place in Wellington Foyer, Level 2, all weekend. On Sunday, chief designer Tony Parker of Massey University, and Head of Hulme Supercars Jock Freemantle will give an informative talk about the design of ‘Bear 1’, and the students of Auckland University will give visitors the lowdown on the design of their FSAE car, and how they’re gearing up for this year’s global competition.

Jock Freemantle will be available for interviews on Friday 13 August, and weather permitting, will be able to give interested journalists a ride in the amazing ‘Bear 1’. Please contact Te Papa’s Communications Manager, Jane Keig, for more details.

Join motorsport designer David Lovegrove and engineer Craig Russell for expert floortalks in theFormula One ™– The Great Design Raceexhibition (entry charges apply).

Don’t miss the free F1 design panel discussion on The Marae on Saturday – a rare chance to hear some of the top designers and commentators candidly discussing their views on F1 technological developments and design rules. David Lovegrove and Craig Russell will be joined by motorsport commentator Bob McMurray and designer Tony Parker for this enlightening discussion.

The popular BA Racer simulators are back in Wellington Foyer, along with some of Kartsport New Zealand’s brand-new racing karts – you can even enter a draw to win a ‘have a go’ ride at your local track! Visitors can get their hands dirty while experiencing the UCOL pit experience out in the Amphitheatre, Level 1, and the kids can design their own racing car and enter into Te Papa’s F1 design competition after getting tips from design experts.

The Constructors Car Club will be out on the Plaza with an array of unique sports cars and replicas, including a 1959 F1 Ferrari Dino 246. The constructors will be on hand to talk to visitors about their cars. Finish off the weekend with a screening ofTrio at the Top, a documentary detailing the successes of New Zealanders Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, and Chris Amon.
