World War II commemoration service
World War II commemoration service at Nelson Cathedral
The dark days at the beginning of World War II will be recalled in a special service to be held at Nelson’s Christ Church Cathedral on Sunday September 13.
Dean Charles Tyrrell says there will be civic guests and representatives of the defence forces, including the Royal New Zealand Air force Association, as the day is also Battle of Britain Sunday.
“This will be a service to remember some of the hard lessons from that dark time of world history,” the Dean said. “It is an opportunity to look at what we as a people can learn from World War II, as well as to pray for peace in our world today.”
During the service there will be the blessing of a plaque commemorating Royal New Zealand Air Force personnel who lost their lives in World War II in the Pacific.
“There are still elderly members of our community who fought in that ‘theatre of war’ and certainly there are many whose parents and grandparents have passed on stories of that time,” the Dean said. “It is fitting that the dedication of the memorial plaque will be a focal point of the commemorative service.”
All
members of the Nelson community are cordially invited to the
service at 3pm at the Cathedral, on Sunday 13 September.
