Young Artists Concerto concert: Sept 13

Press Release: For immediate Use
Press Release Starts:

Sunday 13 September will mark the end of an era, as the 14th Young Artists Concert organised by the Michael Monaghan Young Musicians Foundation is held. Once more, eight of the Wellington region's brightest young musical stars have the opportunity to play a concerto movement with full orchestral accompaniment and while the event will continue to be held in the future, this will be the last concert in the current format.

Conductor and concert manager Peter van Drimmelen has been involved with the Michael Monaghan Foundation from the outset and in the last one and a half decades has witnessed some extraordinary performances from young musicians. "It has been an honour to have been involved," he says. "Many of these players have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians. The Young Artists Concerts have been a highlight of each year for me but it is time for a change and I will announce at the concert how the event will be running in the future."

The Young Artists Concert is a rare opportunity for the burgeoning soloists. Usually students have to content themselves with playing concertos accompanied just by piano, so the chance to experience the work as it is meant to be is a tremendous musical 'boost'. This year the audience will be treated to eight movements from concertos for flute, violin, cello and piano from Ravel and Kabelevsky to Dvorak and others.

"Once again Kenneth Young will share the conducting with me," Peter adds. "I am indebted to Ken and my colleagues in the NZSO, in the Vector Wellington Orchestra and other freelance professionals who have voluntarily given up their time and talent to accompany these young soloists. The Michael Monaghan Foundation was formed to honour the memory of a wonderful player in the NZSO, and I am confident that the future of the concerts is secure and will go on from strength to strength - a fitting tribute to Michael."

The 14th Young Artists Concert will be held in the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hill Street, Wellington at 3pm on Sunday,13 September.
