NZTA testing new electronic information system for motorists  

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises motorists that Variable Message signs (VMS) and Variable Mandatory speed signs (VMSS) will be tested throughout the Ngauranga Gorge on Wednesday night.

The testing will be carried out between 11pm and 2am on the night of Wednesday 16 September from Helston Road down to the railway crossing past the interchange.

Wellington State Highways Manager Rob Whight says the testing is being carried out ahead of the planned implementation of a new traveller information system later this year.

“We’re installing a new travel information system which will make travel easier by using these electronic message signs to provide real-time information about road conditions, delays, warnings and speed restrictions to motorists.”

“Motorists will be soon able to look forward to this kind of information being a fixture on Wellington’s motorway network, keeping them constantly updated about the journey ahead.”

Mr Whight says the tests are being carried out in the middle of the night so disruption to motorists is kept to a minimum.

The tests will include the posting of weather warning, incident and roadwork messages, as well as speeds out on the roadway both North bound and south bound. Traffic management will be in place from 11pm and the tests are expected to be completed by 2 am. Delays are expected to be minimal and Mr Whight thanks motorists for their patience.

The messages displayed are ‘test’ messages, so should be disregarded during this time.
