NZ’s Top Tee Designer is Found
The country’s best t-shirt designer has been found, and he lives in Wellington. Originally from Dunedin, Andrew Harbott entered the inaugural, nationwide Hallensteins and Prodesign search for New Zealand’s best t-shirt designer.
Andrew will have his winning design created into a t-shirt, which will be sold throughout Hallensteins stores nationwide. His t-shirt will be part of an impressive collection of designs by some of New Zealand’s leading graphic designers and artists, such as Otis Frizzell, Stephen Richardson, Shine, Inhouse, Federation and the Bro’ Town illustrators who have collaborated with Scribe.
In-store and online from mid-November, $10 from every t-shirt sold will be donated to Make-A-Wish NZ, with each dollar going directly towards making wishes come true for children with life threatening illnesses.
There were more than 150 entries from designers around the country, which were judged by a selection of the other contributing designers.
Otis Frizzell comments about the judging process: “I was amazed at how many entries there were and the high standard of each. It's always hard judging other peoples art, but we just went through the entries over and over again... whittling down the pile until there was just one left. The winner is a cool illustration that captures the 'Make-A-Wish' concept and also looks like a t-shirt that people will buy - I'd wear one!”
Naturally Andrew is thrilled about edging out the competition to have his design made into a t-shirt, alongside designers of such high calibre. His design is based around the idea of a genie, to represent the idea of making a wish.
He comments: “It's an amazing feeling to win the competition. I didn't expect it at all, I just entered because I was keen to be involved in something a bit different from usual…something that really got the creative juices flowing.”
All of the contributing designers were asked to bring the theme of “I wish…” to life, in keeping with the recipient charity of the t-shirt campaign, Make-A-Wish New Zealand. Make-A-Wish has set up a ‘wish pool’, guaranteeing that 100% of the money raised from the sale of each t-shirt will be spent directly on granting wishes.
