The number of Downtown Community Ministry service users making use of Wellington City Council’s Leisure Card continues to climb.
“We get people coming in most weeks asking about signing up and the different discounts available to them,” says Community Project Worker David Manuel.
“In the last month alone we’ve signed up a few every week.”
One particularly stands out for using the card to its full potential.
“I helped Eddie (surname withheld for privacy) apply for his card around six months ago and since then he hasn’t stopped. It’s fantastic to see him get out and enjoy being active.”
Asked about the card’s worth, Eddie says, “Without the card I’d probably be sitting around at home wasting my time”.
“Thanks heaps to DJ for telling me about it. It’s really helped me get outside and do something.”
Eddie uses the card to access discounts at Freyberg gym where he works out four times a week and hiring dvds from the library.
The Leisure Card was designed to assist people on low incomes to access recreational activities at discount prices. Information can be found by dropping into Downtown Community Ministry offices or visiting http://bit.ly/LeisureCard
