Paula Novak opens gallery on Haumoana beach front
A new arrival on the Hawke’s Bay art scene is Paula Novak whose new gallery on Beach Rd, Haumoana opens to the public from Saturday of Labour Weekend, displaying a cross-section of her vibrant photorealistic paintings, prints and cards.
Local resident and iconic artist Dick Frizzell will officially open the gallery in a private celebration on Friday evening.
Paula pays careful attention to detail in both her photorealistic and surreal work, bringing her subjects alive in ways that seem to go beyond what can be depicted merely by paint on canvas.
Paula relocated to Haumoana on Hawke’s Bay’s Cape Coast less than six months ago and set out to transform a large double garage on her beachfront property into an art gallery and studio.
She’s come from the bush to the beach, having lived in the foothills of the Waitakere Ranges in West Auckland for the past nine years. She and her husband, writer Keith Newman, made the move earlier this year because they fell in love with their new art deco home, and the creative feel of the Cape Coast.
Her catalogue of commissioned works and those she embarks on for personal pleasure reveal a range of influences from C S Lewis, Julie Bell and Rodney Matthews to Salvador Dali, art nouveau stylist Mucha and romantic classicist J.W Waterhouse.
She has photorealistic and personalised portraits, surrealism that is full of symbolism and highly imaginative and striking images morphing human figures into native flora and fauna. Her latest work depicts a serene figure gazing out toward Cape Kidnappers, features as a mural across the front of her new gallery.
The Paula Novak Galley at 158 Beach Rd, Haumoana, will be open to the public from 10am on Saturday of Labour Weekend, October 24th. She plans to be open most weekdays.
