Animal Rights Activist Angry At Award For Turks Poultry Farm

An animal rights activist who was convicted of breaking into Turks Poultry farm is appalled that the company has won an award. Turks Poultry Farm won the Electra Business of the year award on Tuesday night.

Mark Eden, who was convicted of burglary for rescuing twenty battery hens from the farm in 2006, says the company is a disgrace to the local area and doesn’t deserve any awards.

“What on earth were the judges thinking?" he asked
"Judge Susan Snively says “the company exemplifies best practise across all levels”. She obviously wasn’t talking about environmental sustainability, as Turks have been prosecuted for illegally dumping slaughterhouse waste in 2006”.

“Maybe she meant best practice in animal cruelty. Turks Poultry farm confines over 100,000 hens in tiny cages so small they cant even flap their wings. Unlike the Electra Judges, I have been inside the sheds at Turks Poultry Farm and seen the conditions in which these hens live. Battery cage farming would be outlawed if the government hadnt allowed the egg industry to ignore the animal welfare act. The company is a disgrace and Electra should ashamed of themselves for promoting this cruelty.”

“Turks Poultry farm is one of the largest battery hen farms in the lower north island and should be closed down. Most New Zealanders oppose battery cage farming and if politicians did what the people wanted these sorts of farms would have been shut down long ago”
